As I close in on the end of my book, (only three episodes left to post) I am excited and a bit sad. It's been alot of fun recording and putting everything together. I look forward to what people think after they've gotten to the end. But the feeling of it all being over is very much like when I first wrote the book. I get so involved in the characters and thier lives. It gives me a sad feeling that we are parting ways once again. Anyone else get depressed at the end of writing or recording a nov… Continue

EB Fine Writing out Harry Potter

I haven't posted in a very long time. What has happened is this: I continue to get very positive feedback on my novel, and everyone has said the same thing: it's too bad it's fan fiction, can't you take out the Harry Potter so it can be published. I thought, ""Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, thank you very much but I'm not worthy, this is my first piece of fiction, leave it as it is and go on." Yesterday a neighbor if mine stated reading it and by the third chapter was saying it should be published...and… Continue

David Lee Summers Space Pirates

For anyone who enjoyed The Pirates of Sufiro or Children of the Old Stars, you will want to check out Space Pirates! The book features fifteen swashbuckling stories of piracy in space from such authors as Neal Asher, Robert E. Vardeman, C.J. Henderson and Podiobooks' own M.H. Bonham. Also included is my story, "For a Job Well Done" which is a prequel to The Pirates of Sufiro that tells the story of how Ellison Firebrandt met his lover, Suki Mori. There will be another… Continue

D L Owens Podiobooks Community Membership: Pros and Cons

I have just joined the Podiobooks Community at Ning and am still getting a feel for the place. The first thing that I notice is that it isn't abuzz with activity, but this might be because the members don't feel the need to speak endlessly on subjects that they barely understand. I have been a member of various communities in the past: reading, writing, anime, art, etcetera... and each one tends to go to crap as soon as the filters for membership go down. Filters are essential for keeping spamme… Continue

RachelUdin Stuck on Rewrites and Edits

Don't podcast until you get your novel finished. I know that. Which is why I've been burning myself out with rewriting the chapters that simply don't work. I'm somewhere on Chapter 5 looking critically at chapters 2 and 3. I tried to shorthand Chapters 2 and 3 because I knew if I didn't they'd run long. It didn't work, so I have to go back and edit them. I'm resigning myself also on the fact that at the rate I'm going I won't be able to podcast this novel until next year. I also resigned mysel… Continue

Ok, I know I don't have the kit now..But I do have Speaking troubles.. Should I record a selection of chapters of my Draft, and ask you guys to listen? I think even if I do read the final thing, this test will point out some issues that I can fix before I am recording about a weeks worth of Audio. I will include a note, that the crit is for the guy behind the mic, not the stuff in post. Continue

Philippa Ballantine Podcasting addiction

Well it is a few weeks until Digital Magic hits the bookstores- yes 08.08.08 and both Tee and I are pimping like crazy critters, but I have this problem.... I am already casting Digital Magic in my head, even though I promised I wouldn't start recording it for at least a year. I keep reminding myself I have other things to do, but doing Chasing the Bard has given me a taste for the Fey. Oh that, and my first review of Digital Magic- yes it was very nice. Brian Holtz Hello everyone

Hi. My name is Brian Holtz and I'm pretty new here. I gotta say that I love Podiobooks. It's a great way for authors to get thier stuff out there, and a cool way to get turned on to up and coming books. My book just went live today, if anyone is interested. It's called Collapse at Hidden Verse Three-Three-Two. You can find it under science fiction. I'm very excited to see what people think. Anyways, I just wanted to say hello. Brian Continue

Lucas I think I bit off more than I can chew

I thought I could both write and produce a podiobook in 2 months. Then the setback came. A microphone that sounded fine when I was testing it turned out to not sound as good as I wanted it to. That meant I needed to buy another. That's not too much of an issue, but mowing lawns and the like to pay for it has eaten up half the summer. I've also figured out that what looks good in storyboard is harder to write. I've hit writers block. I am determined to write it and produce every single episode b… Continue

RachelUdin Making My Feet Wet... and a blurb...

I figured as I clean the chapters I can record them. Since I'm new to the whole thing, I'm going to try to see if I can get a buffer first. The other thing is that I'm not sure if I should leave the characters with only me podcasting it. =P I haven't found someone who can play Henry, my main character. But then if I commit to that... doesn't that mean that I have to accommodate the other voices? Gah. I'm not sure if I'm good enough to edit 10 plus voices together. Mike Sharpe To Make a Novel, out of a short story..

No, You're not imaging it. I committed a large mistake in my 5500 word Short story.. I had too much action, and not enough required info. The 980 word limit per scene didn't help. So what to do.. Cut up the story.. and hope the missing scenes and dialogue doesn't hurt the story. I couldn't do it. Two short stories.. not when the Last scene of one is the last scene of the other. Brian Clay Busy fighting the good fight.

Well I have tapped into a odd little fount of words. The last few nights every night I have been sitting with my laptop and after a 300-400 word primer piece, usually something like the blog entries I have been making, I turn to a WIP story and move the stories. It hasn't been a struggle the words are all there flowing from the tips of my fingers. I have done some editing on my podio-book vignette... I did a read through and I was not thrilled with the sound of my own voice. The pacing of the re… Continue

Jeffrey Howe Time, time, time

It is becoming clearer and clearer to me that I'm going to have to take vacation time to do decent recordings. Trying to do them in the late-night (for me) time slot results in me sounding as if it's, well, late. As it turns out, reading has exposed some needed edits anyway (at the risk of being ironically repetitive, there is nothing better for making repeated words or padding words stand out than reading a passage aloud) so I don't feel as if I'm losing time. Brian Clay 35 years old and the slip and slide

For my son's 4th birthday, my dad gifted a Spider-man themed slip and slide. Of course it was too cold outside to make use of the toy. This weekend with the temperatures in the 90s my son with sweat pouring down his cheeks he asked me if we could do the slip and slide. Sure, it is a hot day and it will cool him off. Before I get back to the story a little about myself. I am 35 years old, I can boast that in my youth and even in my 20s I was in pretty good shape. Now I have packed on more than a… Continue

Brian Clay The beginning is such a hard place

I am not sure if the title of this entry will really line up with what I am talking about today. I just typed out something before my thoughts organized themselves. Though, as I think about it my thoughts are really not organized yet so all of these words might not make any sense in the long run. I can just edit, right... Just type the words and see what comes out. Sounds like a plan. I remember when I was a pre-teen, today I think they are referred to as tweens, I really enjoyed writing. I woul… Continue

Evo Terra It's not that hard to sound better

You know what I hate? Seeing comments like this: This is a great book! I'm glad I stuck through the really terrible audio and didn't follow my first inclination to shut it off. It's too bad I can't listen to this book in the car because the volume is so low. It's fantastic! The intro music is very loud, so I just skip the first minute and then get into the story. No, none of these are "live" comments from any one particular book. But variations on those themes do crop up… Continue

EB Fine Rough version of intro song

I asked a musician friend of mine if he could create something for my book. I asked for a specific song, Telegraph Lines (Telgrafin telleri), a popular Turkish classical music tune. I want a version of this song because 1) it shows up in the novel, and 2) it's so old there is no copyright issue. I asked for a cross between the traditional way (which can be heavy) and baroque guitar (I have a weakness for baroque music in general), and he came up with this. It's very rough (he is the first to sa… Continue

Philippa Ballantine Shakespeare arrives

Today Chasing the Bard is on podiobooks and I am doing a little happy dance. It's good to be in the fold again and I'm going to be onto this ning thing a bit more. CTB has been doing so much better than I thought, and despite the hard work I am enjoying the production side of it. Last night N came across the headset I once bought intending to use with Skype, but never did. I plugged it in, fired up Audacity and read a few pages of my novel and listened to it. I'll need to practice with pacing and do some rewording past awkward words... I know, I need to get a better microphone. This was just a test. At least it is a start. I'm in the ballpark. Brian Clay Weekending it

This week I spent working my tail off trying to get some proof-of-concept code written for a design project I am working on at the moment. I don't know if anyone else can relate to this, but I find that writing technical documents really kills my ability to write fiction. It seems like the bullet and visio speak that is my day to day has created some kind of prose killing barrier that leaves my brain aching. In the few free moments I had, instead of booting up (who really boots up software anym… Continue

Jeffrey Howe On logistics

I recall being at a writer's conference several years ago at which a well-known successful author more or less suggested to everyone that they had a choice: write at 4 in the morning or let their spouses and kids fend for themselves. I now understand better where she was coming from, even as I still reject her advice. There's no need to stay up past midnight most nights! EB Fine The point to my self-serving blog posts

Two more friends have started reading my novel. Here is a comment from one of them:
I downloaded it at home after work, and after dinner started reading. I've gone straight through to chapter 9, and I hate to stop! I love how everything is so woven together - Turkey, history, magic, cat behavior, the food. As I read, I see you! But apart from that, I just want to read more - the story is captivating me. EB Fine Sounds like

I fell guilty for not having listened to any podiobooks lately. I have been writing my novel, and since the beginning of the month, I have been inundated with editing. I am the director of editing services at a university in Istanbul. I make sure all of our theses and dissertations are ready for publication. On top of that it has inspired me to attempt a podio-book of my own. I have been writing for years, unfortunately I like to eat and have a wife and two children that also enjoy eating so... First of all the title is Arthurian Knights, and this is the first book i have ever written. My book is a new version of the Arthurian Tale. EB Fine How does one know? Where is the bar?

In learning about podcasting books, so far I have learned that there are two basic prerequisites: 1. A book 2. A recording of the book Within these categories are a thousand considerations. I am working on the first prerequisite. I have a book I think I'd like to turn into a podiobook, but I don't know if it is up to the standard of the community. Assuming there is a standard. Are there criteria, even if loose? What are those criteria? Where is the bar? Is there a bar? Continue

EB Fine Beginnings

I've joined the podiobooks group to learn about the mechanics (I probably should say "art") of podcasting. I have had a lot of fun downloading podcasts and listening to them in the car with my daughter as we drive to and from the barn where our horse lives. Most recently we listened to "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Cheesecakes". Not noble stuff, but silly and entertaining. Last November, envious of friends who had done it before, I signed up for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). The… Continue

Jeffrey Howe Waiting for export

It takes a few minutes to move a podcast from wav to wma, and thence to mp3. Those strike me as good moments for blogging, since I wouldn't be productive then anyway. I confess at the outset: most blogs leave me cold. Mine may well be no exception. Yet in the ground between exposure and artfulness there may yet be some space for me to talk about what I'm doing here at podiobooks. BRB, time to levelator. While that's chugging along--why am I here? I suppose it's because I am more interested in… Continue

John Arbuthnot About the Roses

As I have been perusing the catalog looking for the cabbages, I find myself in the awkward position of finding more good than bad. The unfortunate by-product of this discovery is a lack of time to fully explore the stinkers. One solution would be to award roses in lieu of cabbages for those titles. Alas, while I might enjoy that approach, I believe my value to the community is in uncovering those titles which could most improve the Podiobook catalog if they were deleted from it. John Arbuthnot Children of Rhatlan

Johnathan Fesmire's fantasy work contains some wonderful writing and an adequate narration style. Unfortunately, it is largely lost behind the quality of the audio file itself. Fesmire's fanciful -- if slightly derivative (*cough* LadyHawke *cough*) -- idea of "duals" is, indeed, charming and he does an excellent job of developing this idea. The narration and pacing are quite good. I enjoyed this story, but found the sound of his breath on the microphone to be distracting in the extreme. The fi… Continue

John Arbuthnot Suggestions?

As I wander the pathways through the extensive catalog from top to bottom by genre, it occurs to me that listeners may have suggestions for my consideration. I have two titles in progress at the moment, in case one of them improves sufficiently to be removed from the running, but that does not preclude my accepting private nominations for Stinker de la Semaine. If it were totally unlistenable, it might be an improvement. The quality of the sound is almost good enough to hear, but badly distorted by scratchiness and a heaviness in my left ear. Fortunately for Raven, this painful quali… Continue

John Arbuthnot What ho!

How grand it is to be resurrected into these modern times! My mission from beyond is to offer reviews of the titles from your esteemed podiobooks.com. Not the typical sycophantic evaluations, but honest punctures into the inflated so-called talents scattered across the catalog. My goal is to find those cabbages among the roses and to bring them to the light so that others might benefit from the more egregious mistakes. Many of you will name me 'Troll' and other less complimentary epithets. Som… Continue
