As I understand it a virtual book tour is sort of a blog tour - where you guest post or get interviewed on other websites/blogs, correct? I had heard they were very helpful yet time consuming because you may have to write all the posts. My publisher and I sent out books to book review blogs for review. Most of them read the book and gave me a great review others contacted me and told me they loved the book and would do the review "soon" - and others just sort of fell off the map - this I think is pretty normal with most things. Some people do what they say they're gonna do, some "intended" to do what say and other know they ain't gonna do it but just can't say no. So, sorry for the long post - I think it's a mixed bag. I got reviewed on some big sites and saw my Amazon numbers jump and then I got on a lot of small sites, but people told me they saw them...so you never know.
Hope this helps.

Nancy, hello and welcome. I think I speak for all of us when I say we're not sure why we're here either, being confused and befuddled by nature. I've not heard of a virtual tour. If you post you question in the above "Discussion Forum', I think it's more widely seen and discussed.

Thank you all for your comments. It's nice to see so much diversity for why everyone is in this community. I'm not sure why I'm here yet, but I'm not in a hurry for anything.

Hey, has anyone every put on a virtual book tour? If so, do you have any pointers?

Good points, Diana. Here's my story: I had been sitting on my novel for a few years, after frustrating experiences with a couple of agents, and when I started podcasting GLITTER GIRL I just wanted to get it out into the world so I could get on with my creative work--my next novel. Whoa! It has been an amazing experience. Getting positive feedback from readers is probably the best part, but empowering myself as I re-enter the agent-getting game is a close second. I know people have different goals for Podiobooks, but I can hardly explain the tremendous shift in energy that I've experienced by doing it. It has been fun and also a lot of hard work, and boy did I get sick of the tags! But for me totally worthwhile. I'm immersed in my next novel, and it feels fantastic.

And I totally agree with Diana that you should only do it if it's fun for you, because I believe when we do the things we WANT to do we're usually on our path.

Back to my novel. ;)

I mostly lurk - but I had to comment! First - Louise download the guide on this site - it is very specific as to tags and file naming conventions.
Nancy, I completely understand your frustration. I had the exact same concerns. My advise is ONLY do the podiobooks if you love it. I have fun with it and I enjoy it. I sold my series to a major publisher (3 book deal) - I have an agent, my book is in all the stores - I'm "mainstream" - HOWEVER, I still have to gain awareness with an audience. A book only has a shelf live of 1-2 months in a store. So although it might be counter intuitive I think actually "giving" away the audiobook will increase "sales" - I think of pobiobooks - sort of like a library. My books are available at a library to read for free - right?

Hi Nancy, I understand your concern, but I have to say... I've heard of several success stories that came from this site, when the work would otherwise go unseen - or unheard. Ie. JC. Hutchins couldn't sell his 7tn son trilogy, but an editor heard it here and, even before considering the publication of 7th Son, he hired JC to write Dark Art - Personal effects. That is powerful. For my way of thinking, that is very similar to the movie execs who troll the LA comics stores for new material.

Also, several of the authors here are Published. That means you're slipping your work in among the pros. If editors are listening on their drive home, you couldn't be in a better place

Hi, Nancy.
You know, a while ago I had the exact same concerns you are having. Over the period of several months, I kept confiding my frustration to a friend who eventually told me what I should do is save myself all the time and money I was putting into my project and just start buying lottery tickets instead. His advice, although harsh, was well intended, and the point was taken.

If you want to do traditional roads of publishing, POD, or just some online work, Podiobooks is a great way to spread your work to new listeners/readers. Any way you look at it, putting up some cool and free audio is a sure-fire way to have new folks enjoy your writing. :)
