Hey folks. I've been tweaking my audio rig, trying to get a clean read, and I think I may have a winner here. Can you give me feedback and let me know what you think? Loud enough? Clear enough? Interesting enough?

Thanks so much!

I haven't heard your other takes, just to clarify, but I can comment on this one. You probably want to get rid of some of the noise behind your voice. This may be caused by normalizing the volume too high....it sounds a lot better about 6dB softer because it pushes the noise down enough that, while still there, it isn't as offensive. I pulled the overall volume down through a graphic equalizer, played around with a parametric equalizer by doing a high pass filter with a touch of low pass as well, and then lifted the volume up again (but not as high as you did) and I got the attached. The noise is still there but it doesn't start/stop as jarringly. I'm sure it can be made better with more work, but avoiding the noise as much as possible in the first place would be even better.

Ah...I see what you mean. It seems like the Levelator always brings out that background noise because it isn't noticeable, to me at least, in the pre-Levelator version.

Off to do more work on this. Thanks for your tips.

What program do you use to equalize the sound?

I use Adobe Audition. It's about a $400 price tag, but the the concepts of using equalizers to bring up vocal frequencies and high/low pass filters to remove extreme wavelengths can be applied from most audio programs. Just be careful of overdoing it.

I don't use levelator, but if you try upping the mic gain (or simply talking louder) you might avoid it having to raise the volume (and thus the background noise) as much.

Excellent. That's very good to hear.

Tech issues aside, I was engrossed in the story and thoroughly enjoyed your prose.

Thank you! I've been working on this novel since 2005, and I'm excited to finally get it out there for people to respond to.

I listened to the original version, then the one you fixed. The second one actually did sound better. As far as story goes, I was hooked 11 minutes in. There was a lot of imagery, I'll admit you use a lot of bigger words than I understand, but it didn't stop me from understanding most of what was going on. After I heard the intro music I had to turn it up so I could hear you, but once I adjusted my volume it was fine. I really didn't notice much background noise. It seemed pretty original to me. I am interested in the kids and why she was resurrected and what that was all about at the end where she killed herself.
