I'm still trying to get my head around how the podcasting works. This is what I think happens, how far off am I?
1) I have a copy of my mp3 on my website
2) I have a .xml file on my website that points to my mp3 (lists it as an "item")
3) libSynPro has "show" that coordinates people accessing my xml file that finds my mp3.
4) podiobooks has a front-end that funnels listeners through the show to the xml to the mp3.
5) When I want to promote my audiobook, I direct them to it on podiobooks.
Is that right? I don't need the copy of the file on that annoying "file hosting service" anymore?
two things here - one is podcasting, the other is podiobooks.
podcasting is the delivery of some kind of media payload via an RSS enclosure tag to a specialized feed reader (often called a podcatcher). It could be an mp3 or a PDF, or almost anything that can be put into a single file (including a zipp archive).
podiobooks are serialized audio books that are delivered via podcasting through the podiobooks.com website. The podiobooks.com website is - as you point out - a front-end that links the text/graphic elements of the book to the feed that delivers the mp3. all of us who are podiobook authors have uploaded our books to the libsyn website and they are organized into "shows" .. or in our case "titles"
When you want to publish your audiobook with podiobooks.com, you establish an author account with podiobooks and upload it to libsyn. After some minor QC work, the title will appear in the podiobooks.com catalog. In your promotional efforts you can point to the title page on podiobooks, or to itunes, or to your own RSS feed if you keep one going.
There are two things to clarify ...
1. Libsyn points to a copy of the file that has been uploaded to libsyn for podiobooks. If you want to keep a copy of your own, that gives you some more flexibility in how/who/what you deliver.
2. Podiobooks doesn't promote individual works. Promotion is up to you. They have the catalog, but each of us has to find a way to get people to notice our entry.
Thank you, Nathan. Putting together what you've said with what Evo said (in his email) with what I see on LibSyn and I think I'm getting it. I think I got confused looking at general podcasting stuff.
