Podiobooks.com Community

A place for all fans, authors and creators of Podiobooks.com

So I'vee been toying with the idea of a national language version of podiobooks, being a Dutchman (who himself has no problems listening to English audioboooks (whether podio or otherwise), I know of some people who listen to audiobooks when driving - they drive lots so they listen lots too - ) and even though they have a decent enough grasp of the English langauge, they have to spend a lot of mental cycle-time to it, which makes it unsuitable when driving. So I thought about making a Dutch simile of Podiobooks (what with the podiobooks software being open source now - even more incentive to do it. I have the webserver with spafce for ± >200 novels to do it (on my home-ADSL-connection, which makes for poor download speeds, especially when there are multiple people downloading at once, but anyway, let's presume the technical side taken care of for now. What I still have questions about would be: the promotion side of things - how do I get started, maybe write to the newspaper or something The manhours aspect - how much time does it take to host this website/SERVICE (written in all-caps, since a lot of work shoudl be getting into supporting authors (and answering questions of readers/addressing (technical) issues)
Am I biting of more than I can chew?

I'm missing something.

If you put the podiobooks site into dutch, the mp3 files will still be in the language we record them in, so how will that help your friends who are driving and listening?

If I'm got what Nathan is thinking: To make to Worse, you need to contact everyone on the site to Approve of a Dutch translation of their MP3 files, which I should mention it means translating ENTIRE Novels, some have issues to being translated. (Nathan by the way has 6 at last count, and 3 in the works.)

What I think you meaning is that you want to create a Dutch version of the site for books in Dutch. I don't see why not. Not unless someone else has done it. But be wary, Evo moves several Gigabites in a day. He also has one of the better podcasting back ends supporting it.

I don't see to have made myself clear:
I do NOT want to make a podioobooks.nl, (with novels from the .com site, either translated or not ) but rather start a whole new service for Dutch authors and readers, as in: creating a whole new realm of original Dutch novels, and I don't intend to use the name podiobooks.nl, rather only refer to this site.I have already come up with a different name (not registered yet).

But your comment, "be wary, Evo moves several Gigabites in a day. He also has one of the better podcasting back ends supporting it" is a good warning indeed! I'll be wary! Of course, starting something like this creates a responsability towards the authors and readers. So I may have to look into professional hosting , which are expenses I may not be willing to make...

Thank you for clearing that up.

Marco,

Bravo on the consideration. I'm happy to answer any questions. Here are those in the order in which they were asked:

You start by starting. I didn't give any promotional consideration to Podiobooks.com when I dreamed it up in 2005. There were five novels currently being podcast when it launched. I contacted all of them and asked if I could first link to them and then host the media files on my own. Everything else grew organically out of that.

I spend about 20 hours a week on Podiobooks.com. That's correspondence, new submissions and new episode uploading. Technical issues beyond my control may take another 10 hours a month on the outside.

More than you can chew? If you're trying it solo, yes. I leaned heavily on my co-founders at the start and relied on more than one author previously (hi, Matt and JC) and still have them help today (hi, Nathan and PG). But it goes further than just them. Hundreds of authors tell people about our site every day. Rhonda and Heather launched an entire live show to simply support the authors and books on our site. It's a community effort, to be sure.

Let me know how we can help!

Thanks Evo,

You've been a great help with that post! Thanks! And consideringeverything, I may not go for it after all. Only today I rtied downloading a large amount of data frm my FTP-server across my ADSL-line, and it went agonizingly slowly, which means that multiple people downloading multiple novels simultenously will be excruciatingly slow. So I'd have to start up by runing into expenses from the get-go, even if the total amount of traffic will be small - at first! -.

On top of that, I only have a few friends/acquaintances who are into the business of listening to audiobooks, And they'd both have to be willing and able to cooperate in this.

BTW I'm just a stupid tourist, I've never heard of Rhonda and Heather, friends of yours? Or TV-show hosts?

>Rhonda and Heather, friends of yours?

Kinda, They are actually Authors here.

>Or TV-show hosts?

Nope. But they're Podcast Hosts, of PodioRacket, the Podcast about Podiobooks. http://www.podioracket.com/

I really need to make it clear, most people here are real Authors, and then read their own Book for their podiobook. They can as they own the rights to create AudioBooks versions of their work. This is will be an issue for most Podiobooks-like start ups.

Whist I can't speak Dutch, I know at least one Author who's happy for a Translation of his work being let out for free, but only with the Authors Permission.
